요즘 이슈는 토성의 17번째 위성인 타이탄에 도착한 호이겐스 호이다. 뉴스와 신문에서는 호이겐스 호가 전송해주고 있는 타이탄의 정보를 심심치 않게 볼 수 있다. 타이탄... 그 행성이름을 들으면 영화 Gattaca가 생각난다. Gattaca의 주인공인 빈센트가 그렇게도 갈망하던 우주탐험의 꿈을 이루며 향한 곳이 타이탄이였다.

누가 나에게 가장 좋아하는 영화를 물어본다면 나는 주저 없이 Gattaca라고 대답할 것이다. 이 영화를 처음 본 건 1998년 가을이였을것이다. 당시 대학교 1학년이였다. 어느 한적한 주말. 늘 그렇듯 친구들과 모여 농구 한게임 때린뒤 John의 방에 모여서 파파존스 피자를 시켜 먹으며 TV에서 해주는 영화를 보고 있었다. 주말이면 영화를 틀어주는 V-TV에서는 "Gattaca"를 보여주고 있었다. 우리가 TV를 틀었을때는 1/4정도 지난 부분이였지. 이영화를 이미 봤던 John이 초반 부분을 간단히 설명해 주었고, 피자를 먹으면서 이영화를 봤다. 영화 중간부터 보는걸 증오하는 나지만 이 영화는 왠지 끌리는 부분이 있어 계속 보게 되었다. 영화는 감동 그 자체였지. 영화가 끝난후 친구들은 기숙사 라운지로 나가서 다른 아이들과 놀고 있는데, 나는 방에 남아서 Gattaca를 다시 보기 시작했다. V-TV는 주말 내내 같은 영화를 반복 틀어준다. 좋아하는 영화를 몇번이고 볼 수 있는 나에겐 참 좋은 시스템이지. ^^



Gattaca... 뭐가 그렇게 끌리는 영화일까? 이 영화는 내가 좋아하는 요소를 두루 갖춘 영화이다. 상상력을 자극하는 SF 요소가 들어있고, 인간에게 불가능이 없음을 보여주는 도전하는 도전정신이 들어있다. 그리고 적절하게 그려저 있는 주인공의 로맨스와 사람사이의 말로 형언할 수 없는 우정이 깃들어 있는 영화이다. 이 요소들을 하나 하나 집어 볼 까 한다.

SF 요소. 이 영화의 배경은 이 시대에서 그리 멀지 않은 미래. 사람들은 피부색이나 인종대신에 유전자의 우수성에의해 차별대우를 받는 시대이다. 사람이 태어나면 그의 피 샘플로 그의 대략적인 수명까지 파악되는 그런 시대이다. 미래의 발전된 모습을 구체적으로 보여주는것은 아니지만, 유전자에 의해서 제어되는 사회를 표현하는데 전혀 부족함이 없는 세팅을 가지고 있다.

도전 정신. 주인공인 빈센트는 약한 심장을 가지고 태어난 열등 유전자 인간이다. 그는 우주 항해사가 되는 꿈을 가지고 있고, 그 꿈을 이루기 위해 열심히 준비한다. 하지만 그가 속한 사회에서는 유전자 검사만으로 그의 꿈을 간단히 비웃고 만다. 하지만 빈센트는 절대 포기하지 않는다. 부조리한 사회제도에서 기회를 얻기 위해서 비록 부조리한 방법으로 택했지만, 거의 꿈에대한 강렬한 의지는 보는 사람으로 하여금 그의 방법이 전혀 부조리하게 느껴지지 않게한다. 빈센트는 결국 우주항해사가 되고, 그 모습에서 꿈을 이뤄내는 인간의 불굴의 의지를 볼 수 있다.

로맨스. 같은 직장에서 근무하는 아이린과 싹트는 사랑. 애절하진 않지만, 서로에 호기심을 가지고 접근하는 모습. 그리고 빈센트의 실체를 알았을때 그녀의 반응 등등. 이 영화를 흥미롭게 하는 요소중 하나 이다.

친구간의 우정. 빈센트와 유진. 공생하는 관계로 시작된 두사람이지만, 공생하면서 서로에 대해 알게되고, 둘 사이에 보이지 않는 우정과 믿음이 싹트게 된다. 영화에서는 둘사이의 우정을 표현하는 장면은 별로 보이지 않는다. 하지만 유진이 이루지 못한 꿈을 빈센트가 이뤄줬고, 그에 감사하는 유진의 모습. 그리고 빈센트가 여행을 떠나감과 동시에 이세상을 떠나가는 유진의 모습에서 둘의 말로 표현하기 힘든 관계를 느낄수 있다.

또 하나의 우정은 회사 주치의와 빈센트의 관계. 처음부터 빈센트의 정체를 알았던 주치의. 하지만 그는 비밀을 밝히지 않는다. 빈센트는 그가 알고 있다는걸 마지막에 가서야 알게되지. 그 역시 빈센트와 같은 완벽하지 않은 아이를 가지고 있다. 그리고 그 아들에게 빈센트와 같은 사람이 있다는걸 알리고 꿈을 심어줄려는 케릭터 이다. 영화 끝장면에서 그 의사가 빈센트의 본명을 불러줄때.... 그 때 빈센트의 표정에서 오만가지 감정이 스쳐가는것을 알 수 있다.

글이 너무 길어진것같다. 너무나도 많은 요소들이 나로 하여금 이영화를 좋아하게 만든다. Gattaca. 아직 보지 못했다면 꼭 보기를 권하는 영화이다.
